Britain is turning into a paternalist’s paradise. Harebrained schemes that nanny statists had previously only dreamt of are at real risk of reaching the statute books, backed by a Prime Minister who abandoned his libertarian instincts around the time we were all watching The Tiger King.
If it’s not pettifogging health chiefs calling for calorie counts on alcohol, it’s puritanical councils promising illiberal outdoor smoking bans, or the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence seeking to record expectant mothers’ alcohol consumption regardless of whether they consent.
