TN CM unveils portraits of three freedom fighters in Legislative Assembly

Palaniswami on Tuesday unveiled the portraits of freedom fighters V O Chidambaram, P Subbarayan and Omandur Ramasamy Reddiyar in the state Assembly. Hailed as Kappalottiya Tamizhan (The Tamil Helmsman), Chidambaram, popularly known by his initials VOC, was a freedom fighter and barrister from Ottapidaram in Tuticorin. He had launched the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company in 1906 to counter the monopoly of the British. Paramasivan Subbarayan was also a freedom fighter and diplomat. He was the Chief Minister of Madras Presidency. Ramasamy Reddiyar was also Premier of the Madras Presidency. Last year, the chief minister had announced that portraits of the three leaders would be unveiled in the assembly to honour their yeoman services to the nation.

Bihar assembly witnesses different shades of Nitish Kumar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday strongly defended his government against accusations of maladministration and berated the opposition for its allegations but making itself scarce whenever it was countered with facts. Observations to the effect were made repeatedly by the chief minister on the floor of the Assembly while replying to the debate on the motion of thanks to the governors address. The 70-year-old leader spoke for more than an hour and the last 30 minutes were spent with the opposition in abstentia as MLAs of the RJD, Congress and the Left staged a walkout expressing dissatisfaction with the chief ministers reply.

Tuesday made inroads in Gujarat politics, winning 27 seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC). Elections to six municipal corporations in the state were held on Sunday and counting took place on Tuesday. While the BJP retained power by winning 93 seats in the 120-seat SMC, the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP won remaining 27 seats. The Congress, which had won 36 seats in SMC last time, was reduced to zero seats. As fuel prices soar, Tejashwi Yadav drives tractor to reach Bihar assembly

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav on Monday drove a tractor to reach the Bihar assembly, in an expression of solidarity with those opposing the farm laws and protest against spiralling rise in prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas. The leader of the opposition also flayed the Nitish Kumar government in the state for keeping mum on the issue of oil price rise and claimed that agriculturists in Bihar were often forced to sell their produce at rates less than half of the MSPs because of the abolition of APMCs. Yadavs tractor ride, in which he was joined by some party colleagues including RJD national general secretary and MLA Alok Mehta, began at his residence, right across the road from the chief ministers bungalow.
