Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (
MSRTC) has now also become the official goods carrier and has begun making profit.
Since May 2019, the state transport corporation opened a new revenue source, to become
goods transporter for government and private companies. For this new arm, no
new buses were procured, instead, its existing fleet that is aging gets retrofitted or converted from passenger buses to
cargo carriers by removing the seats, shuttering the windows and making a loading-unloading door at the rear.
“In the last two years, we have converted 1,150 of our buses that are about 7-8 years old and before starting this cargo unit used to undergo overhauling. In place of re-utilising them as passenger buses, we now convert them and make them fit to transport goods,” said

cities and towns of the state.
RedBus,
India’s largest online bus ticketing platform, has started online booking for more than 400
bus operators on its platform in Maharashtra, thus opening up all the major routes connecting cities such as
Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Aurangabad and Kolhapur.
Both the private bus operators and the state-owned
