THURSDAY, Feb. 4, 2021 (HealthDay News) Listening to recorded music is associated with a significant reduction in anxiety and pain following cardiac surgery, according to a review published online Jan. 25 in
Open Heart.
Ellaha Kakar, from Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and colleagues conducted a systematic literature search and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials evaluating music interventions in cardiac surgery.
Based on 20 eligible studies for qualitative analysis (1,169 patients) and 16 studies for meta-analysis (987 patients), the researchers found that the first postoperative music session was associated with significantly reduced postoperative anxiety and pain. There were reductions of 4.00 points on the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory and 1.05 points on the Visual Analogue Scale/Numeric Rating Scale for anxiety and a reduction of 1.26 points on the Visual Analogue Scale/Numeric Rating Scale for pain. Multiple days of music interven
RCT: Sage extract offers working memory and cognitive performance benefits A sage extract and essential oil combination can significantly improve cognitive performance, according to a new industry funded RCT.
The Lamiaceae family of plants includes psychoactive herbs such as rosemary, lemon-balm, peppermint and sage, which have been shown to express high levels of phenolic acids and polyphenols.
Extracts from this family of plants often share common mechanisms of action relevant to the brain - such as inhibition of acetylcholinesterase and binding allosterically to gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABAA), nicotinic and muscarinic receptors - attributable to their terpene content.
The phenolic constituents have also demonstrated cognitive effects such as increases in brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in neurons. A recent trial by Kennedy. D. O., et al demonstrated the more robust effects - ac
Unlike drugs, music has no known side effects and may be worth offering to patients
Listening to music is linked to a significant reduction in anxiety and pain after major heart surgery, finds a pooled data analysis of the available evidence, published in the online journal Open Heart.
As music has neither risks nor known side effects, unlike drugs, but may influence health outcomes, clinicians should consider it for patients scheduled for major heart surgery, suggest the researchers.
Heart surgery patients are often anxious before their procedure, and often experience severe pain afterwards, despite being given sedatives and strong pain relief, say the researchers.
