NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered States and Union Territories (UTs) to take a decision by January 31 on the opening of Anganwadi centres across the country, except in the case of containment zones in the view of Covid-19. A Bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan also directed the States and UTs to ensure that nutritional standards as provided under the food safety law reach pregnant women, lactating mothers and children suffering from malnutrition. The apex court also ordered the Ministry of Women and Child Development to take a decision in this regard by January 31. The UTs and States must make arrangements of opening Anganwadis only after consulting their respective State Disaster Management Authorities, said the apex court, adding that complete redressal management should be put in place.

Bird deaths were reported from at least four new states Haryana, Punjab, Odisha and Uttar Pradesh even as a central team surveyed the avian flu-affected areas of Alappuzha in Kerala on Thursday to assess the situation after the outbreak of the H5N8 virus. Kerala is the worst affected among the four states where avian influenza has been confirmed after bird samples tested positive. The other three states are Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The three-member central team visited the bird flu-affected places Karuvatta, Pallippad and Thakazhi and inspected the culling of birds. It will submit a report on the bird flu spread, the features of the virus and whether the culling methods meet the central guidelines. The team is also studying the public health risk of H5N8.

As bird mortality increases, more States step up vigil to curb spread of avian influenza ANI | Updated: Jan 08, 2021 01:10 IST New Delhi [India], January 8 (ANI): In the wake of mortality of poultry, crows, migratory birds reported from the states of Kerala, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh, the Centre held a meeting with the states to understand the status of the outbreak of avian influenza and to suggest measures to states/UTs for control and prevent spread of the disease. Besides ensuring collection of representative samples and timely submission to the designated laboratories (RDDLs/CDDL/ICAR-NIHSAD), the Secretary, Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Government of India requested State Animal Husbandry departments to ensure effective communication and coordination with health authorities for close vigilance of the disease status and avoid any chances of jumping of the disease into humans.
