A nationwide one-day initiative led to Illinois State Police issuing more than 1,000 citations or warnings as part of the Click It or Ticket, Border to Border Operation.
The campaign will be extended this holiday weekend, with law enforcement agencies across the state increasing patrols for seat belt and other violations.
In addition, police will be looking for those speeding, driving while distracted or driving under the influence.
Illinois State Police Director Brendan Kelly said the initiative is meant to highlight the importance of safe driving.
“As the weather continues to warm up, our troopers see an increase in motor vehicle accidents [that] include serious or fatal injuries, all of which could have been avoided,” he said.
