Building on its commitment of environmental sustainability, Selkirk College is recognizing a pair of exemplary stewards who advanced the institution’s goals over the last year.
The Selkirk College Environmental Sustainability Awards are presented annually to a student and an employee who have made significant contributions to the post-secondary’s commitment. Director of Facilities Ron Zaitsoff and Recreation, Fish & Wildlife Program student Zoë Leech are being recognized for demonstrating outstanding leadership on initiatives that have reduced the college’s carbon footprint while encouraging a sustainability culture on campus and within the broader community.

The City of Ithaca has hired a new sustainability director who will advance the city s Green New Deal.
Luis Aguirre Torres will be at the helm leading the initiative and will join the city s Department of Planning and Development in less than three weeks.
Torres brings over 15 years of domestic and international experience working with government, non-profit and business sectors in green technology, policy development and implementation, emissions reduction, green entrepreneurship, and related issues, stated a press release from the City of Ithaca. In 2012 he was recognized by President Barack Obama as a “Champion of Change: Connecting the Americas” for his work in promoting the development and adoption of clean technology and sustainable business practices in Latin America.
