Mercedes-Benz E300e PHEV: High-performance hybrid could tick all the boxes

Mercedes-Benz E300e PHEV: High-performance hybrid could tick all the boxes Road test: The E-Class still has edge on rivals, with sharper steering an added bonus If you fancy a hybrid with a plug then it’s probably time to get a move on. The Government has announced that it is trimming grants for buyers of plugin-hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) from July 1st. From that date, the current grant, given by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, will be cut from €5,000 to €2,500. Will it severely hit orders for Mercedes’ E-Class PHEV? The company’s Irish executives seem a little irked, warning us that “the risk inherent in the removal of incentives is that it will likely have an adverse affect opposite to what the intention might have been”.

Emissions from Irish power generation and major industry drop 6%

Emissions from Irish power generation and major industry drop 6% Reduction did not match decrease of 11-12% across Europe in 2020, EPA finds about 3 hours ago The most significant emissions increases occurred in dairy and pharma-chemical industries in Ireland. File photograph: iStock   Emissions from Irish power generation and major industrial companies fell by 6.4 per cent in 2020 to their lowest level since the EU emissions trading system (ETS) was introduced in 2005, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This resulted in a significant reduction of 0.9 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, but Ireland’s performance in reducing emissions associated with electricity generation, heavy industry and aviation did not match a decrease of 11-12 per cent across Europe, the EPA noted.

Ireland to replace last coal plant with huge green hub and floating wind farm

12 April 2021 The Republic of Ireland is set to say goodbye to coal, after the state-owned Electricity Supply Board announced it would transform its last remaining coal generation, the 915MW Moneypoint facility, into a green energy hub, including a 1.4GW floating offshore wind farm. The closure of the Moneypoint coal-fired power station is in line with the Ireland Government’s ambition of reaching net zero emissions by 2050. It was already scheduled “no later than 2025”. The Moneypoint site in County Clare will now be transformed into a green energy hub, and work has already begun on a new €50m Sustainable System Support facility which will include the largest Synchronous Compensator in the world, which will provide a range of electrical services to the country’s electricity grid which would previously have been supplied by thermal fired power stations.
