Janice Codeluppi couldn’t hold back the tears as she spoke of the impact of personal support worker (PSW) shortages in her mom’s GTA long-term care (LTC) home in the past year.
She said in her mom’s unit, there are 32 beds with only two PSWs at a time to look after 12-16 residents.

As a result of the shortages, she said, her 87-year-old mom Joan Arbuckle fell in the night last December and “lay screaming for help for two hours.”

Milverton’s Knollcrest Lodge is set to receive nearly $820,000 in federal-provincial infrastructure funding to help pay for upgrades to the Perth East long-term care home’s heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and infection-prevention and control systems, among other needed improvements.
The money is part of a $100-million investment that will help 95 Ontario long-term-care homes install new heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, and retrofit or repair fire sprinkler systems.

“I am very pleased that residents and staff at Knollcrest Lodge will benefit from this funding,” Pettapiece said in a press release announcing the funding Friday morning. “We’re fortunate to have Knollcrest and so many other homes across our riding that provide exceptional care.”
