North Rose student wins public speaking contest

The Roosevelt School at Long Island University, in partnership with the Theodore Roosevelt Association, announced the winners of this year’s Theodore Roosevelt Public Speaking Contest.
Submissions from high school juniors and seniors across the nation were narrowed down to the top 10 finalists, who went on to compete in the virtual finals. The finalists delivered live presentations on “Why Theodore Roosevelt Matters in the 21st Century” to a panel of four judges via Zoom.
Abi Jo Wanek from North Rose-Wolcott High School took first place and received a $25,000 scholarship to LIU.
May 12, 2021Students at Long Island University (LIU) are taking advantage of a mobile-access and payment solution this year that spares them from handling ID cards or touching screens or other surfaces. The MyLIU Mobile Card system provides them with access to services on campus, ranging from library book checkout to meal purchases and dorm entrance, via the tap of their smartphone. The system, provided by payment-solutions company Transact, is also being used by the campus staff and faculty.
The solution consists of Near Field Communication (NFC) readers that read and forward data from users phones, as well as Transact s app that manages the collected read data for each transaction, while enabling Google Pay and Apple Pay transactions. What inspired you to run for school board and what do you hope to accomplish with a three-year term?
I am extremely grateful to the LCSD for the education my son received. He had a reading disability and started receiving special education services in second grade. The support we got from the teachers and administrators was amazing. With that support, he became an honors student, and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in engineering. My gratitude to the district, my strong belief in public education, and my dedication to community service inspire me to work hard to ensure that the standards in Lakeland remain high, so that other families can have a similar experience. As an active member of the Audit and Budget committees, I believe my financial background will help ensure that Lakeland remains a financially healthy district, providing quality education to our students as well as extra-curricular
