ISLAMABAD: On a petition of PPP leader Yusuf Raza Gillani challenging the rejection of his seven votes in the Senate chairman election, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday served notices on respondents on an intra-court appeal.
A division bench of the Islamabad High Court comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri heard the appeal against the decision of a single bench. Gillani s lawyer Farook H Naek appeared before the court and adopted the stance that the single bench had dismissed their case on two grounds. He argued that the election was held under Article 60 and the Senate used to prepare rules under Article 67 of the Constitution. He contended that rules and procedures were prepared by the then Senate in 2012, which were silent about the procedure regarding the election of Senate chairman. He said there is no procedure and method specified in the rules for the Senate chairman poll.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday admitted an intra-court appeal of former prime minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani challenging the dismissal of his petition against rejection of seven votes cast in his favour in the election of Senate chairman.
Mr Gilani filed the appeal in the Islamabad High Court against the judgement of a single-member IHC bench, through his counsel Farooq H. Naek and Javed Wains.
An IHC division bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri took up the appeal.
The hearing on the matter was adjourned till April 13. IHC website/File
ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday sought a report from registrar’s office regarding fixing of appeals of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and retired Capt Safdar against their conviction in the Avenfield properties reference.
The court, however, decided to hear the appeal filed against the acquittal of former finance minister Shaukat Tarin, former prime minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and others, observing that such appeals are not being heard as per the standard operating procedures (SOPs) devised to counter the coronavirus pandemic.
An IHC division bench comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani took up the applications filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) seeking early hearing of a set of appeals in the cases against Mr Sharif, Ms Nawaz and Capt Safdar.

ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Thursday issued notices to 21 lawyers for misconduct and ambush in the court.
A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Athar Minallah and comprising Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb and Justice Lubna Saleem Pervaiz sought reply from the lawyers within one week.
The Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) President Haseeb Chaudhry, Riasat Ali Azad and other lawyers appeared before the bench.
During hearing Chief Justice Athar Minallah observed that this is not his personal issue, but directly relates with the sanctity of the court. “We would send references against lawyers involved in the IHC attack, under the law,” he said.
ISLAMABAD: Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday issued notices to the nephew of Prime Minister Imran Khan, assistant commissioner (rural), the district magistrate and Banigala SHO on a petition filed against ‘forced’ acquisition of petitioners land.
The petitioners Azmatullah and Mohammad Umar Gondal filed the petition through their counsel Raja Rizwan Abbasi and Danish Abbasi.
The petition stated that petitioners purchased land measuring 30 kanals in Mohra Noor Islamabad which is adjacent to the land of Prime Minister Imran Khan.
It said that out of 30 kanals, they have sold 16 kanals while 14 kanals of land was in their possession.
