President Joe Biden on Friday fired Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul, a Trump administration appointee, after he refused to resign from the post. The move follows a tension-filled two-year tenure as congressional Democrats and elderly and disability advocates pushed for the president to oust Saul, who was known for his staunch anti-union stance that became increasingly controversial as the executive agency dealt with federal employee unions amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Biden Ousts Trump Holdovers from Social Security Administration

Biden Ousts Trump Holdovers from Social Security Administration Removal of the agency’s leadership follows a Supreme Court decision finding that laws barring a president from firing political appointees without cause are unconstitutional. The Biden administration on Friday fired Social Security Commissioner Andrew Saul and Deputy Commissioner David Black, following months of lobbying by advocacy groups and federal employee unions. Kilolo Kijakazi, the agency’s deputy commissioner for the retirement and disability policy and a Biden appointee, will lead the agency on an acting basis. Kijakazi announced the ouster of Saul and Black, both holdovers from the Trump administration, in an email to Social Security employees Friday afternoon.

States Plan to Deploy National Guard, Police to US-Mexico Border

States Plan to Deploy National Guard, Police to US-Mexico Border Voice of America 09 Jul 2021, 09:35 GMT+10 Amid record-setting migrant arrivals at the U.S.-Mexico border, several Republican-led states as far away as South Dakota are mobilizing to send National Guard units to the region at the behest of the Republican governors in Texas and Arizona who have criticized the Biden administration s response to the surge. Although cooperation between state and federal authorities on border enforcement and immigration matters is hardly new, the scale of expected involvement by U.S. states far from the southern border is widely viewed as unprecedented.

America s Accountability Problem

America’s Accountability Problem Capitol attack, and the Trump years are any indication, the American lexicon has essentially dispensed with the term “accountability.” This should come as no surprise. After all, there’s nothing particularly new about this. In the Bush years, those who created a system of indefinite offshore detention at  Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, those who implemented a CIA global  torture program and the National Security Agency’s  warrantless surveillance policy, not to mention those who purposely took us to  war based on lies about  nonexistent Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, were neither dismissed, sanctioned, nor punished in any way for obvious violations of the law. Nor has Congress passed significant legislation of any kind to ensure that all-encompassing abuses like these will not happen again.
