6 Jun 2021 The American Bar Association Center for Human Rights (ABA CHR) is seeking an experience staff attorney to join its Justice Defenders Program. Candidates with substantial experience working on issues pertaining to human rights in Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are encouraged to apply. 1) Background The Justice Defenders Program provides pro bono legal assistance to human rights advocates working in difficult environments and vulnerable circumstances by: • Advising on, and raising public awareness of, sensitive trials and cases; • Connecting pro bono lawyers with requisite expertise with local lawyers to provide advice on international law standards, share best practices, and assist in developing advocacy and litigation strategies; and

Part-Time Consultancy: Protection of Human Rights Defenders in the Occupied Palestinian Territories

26 Apr 2021 The American Bar Association Center for Human Rights is seeking a contracting organization to 1) identify cases related to attacks against human rights defenders (HRDs); 2) conduct meetings with judges, public prosecutors, government officials, and civil society organizations to discuss HRD cases; 3) observe trials on behalf of the Justice Defenders Program. The contracting organization should be based in the Occupied Palestinian territories and hold expertise in each of the aforementioned tasks. How to apply The Center is looking for cost estimates for such an undertaking (per/deliverable). They will also be familiar with basic digital and physical security protocols and secure communications platforms. Tainted Stones: Sandstone produced by bonded labor and child labor makes its way into the United States

Photo by Mahitosh Bagoria/Courtesy of HEDCON (Health, Environment, and Development Consortium) Last month, the Department of Labor added Indian sandstone to its watchlist of products potentially derived from child labor, partly as a result of reporting by the American Bar Association Center for Human Rights. The Center’s latest report, Tainted Stones: Bonded Labor and Child Labor in the India-U.S. Sandstone Supply Chain finds that the industry employs nearly three million workers but is marred by the persistence of bonded labor, intergenerational bonded labor, and child labor. Sandstone is a commonly used stone for paving and construction  likely you’ve seen some form of it in a large office lobby or outdoor installation.
