Controversy surrounds UFV decision to postpone pro-life event

Print Edition: April 10, 2013 A pro-life presentation at UFV scheduled to take place tonight has been postponed by the university. Members of Life Link, the student club responsible for the event, contend that it has been cancelled by the administration. The group invited Michael Schouten of WeNeedALaw.ca to speak in favour of a law banning sex-selective abortions in Canada. In an April 8 press release, Life Link president Ashley Bulthuis framed the dispute as a censorship issue, asking “[w]hy has the university suddenly disregarded its commitment to free speech in regards to the gendercide and abortion issues?” Last year’s Life Link president Rebecca Groen echoed these sentiments, citing a successful debate the club held last year with attendance of over 100 students as evidence that the university’s security concerns are not legitimate.

Eerie: Canadian Church Walled Off Where Pastor Dared to Hold Services

Share Source: AP Photo/Pat Wellenbach The plight facing Pastor James Coates sounds like something out of almost any other country other than a supposedly free one, like Canada. Pastor Coates, of the GraceLife Church in Alberta, was recently jailed for a little over a month for violating the Public Health Act because he dared to hold church services. While he was recently released, that s not the end of the troubles facing him or his church. A update list regarding Coates was published by Church Leaders, including to do with his release on March 22. While Tré Goins-Phillips of Faithwire reported that Coates was released after the Alberta government dropped the criminal charges, he also noted that the pastor is, though, still facing financial charges for violating health orders.

Alberta authorities fence off church they say violates COVID restrictions

Last Updated: Thursday, April 8, 2021 12:05 A long-running battle between the pastor and members of an Alberta church, who say their Charter rights are being threatened by provincial restrictions designed to fight COVID-19, and health authorities, who say the church is breaking the law, has taken another turn. On Wednesday morning, RCMP and members of Alberta Health Services moved to “physically close” the GraceLife Church west of Edmonton–erecting chain link fencing surrounding the church and its parking lot in Spruce Grove in Parkland County. “Alberta Health Services physically closed GraceLife Church and has prevented access to the building until GLC can demonstrate the ability to comply with Alberta’s chief medical officer of health’s (CMOH) restrictions,” AHS said in a statement Wednesday morning.

Advocacy group challenges tickets handed out during Saskatoon lockdown protest

The Justice Centre says they were each fined $2,800 for attending an outdoor gathering that exceeded a 10-person limit. A statement from the Justice Centre says banning outdoor protests of more than 10 people violates charter rights to freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression. It says one of the people ticketed, a young mother, wanted to know what data the government was using to make health orders, including one that required her son to wear a mask in kindergarten. The Justice Centre says the other protester fined was voicing concerns about improper mask usage and the burden placed on people who can t wear face coverings.
