(CNS News) Although 20 Senate Republicans voted to confirm Merrick Garland as attorney general of the United States on March 10, most of the conservative GOP senators voted nay. Going into the vote, some leaders in the conservative movement told
CNS News why they opposed Garland.
In a March 2 open letter from the Conservative Action Project, 68 conservative leaders urged Republicans in the Senate to oppose Garland’s confirmation.
The letter cited Garland’s ambiguity over the law on whether attacking a federal court house at night or during the day constitutes “domestic terrorism”; his unwillingness to condemn remarks that “black people are genetically superior to white people”; and his unwillingness to denounce the comment that “any pro-life advocate is unfit for office.”
Arkansas senator Tom Cotton, known for his hardline immigration views, was one of 30 Republicans to vote against Merrick Garland s confirmation as attorney general.

Former U.S. Circuit Judge Merrick Garland was confirmed as President Joe Biden s Attorney General Wednesday afternoon, but a number of Republicans voted against his nomination.
Texas Republican Ted Cruz was one of them, but still hopes Garland will carry out a number of important investigations.
“Judge Garland built a reputation for integrity on the federal bench, and I hoped that over the course of his nomination for Attorney General he would indicate a commitment to the rule of law as Attorney General as well. Unfortunately, he refused to make clear that he would stand against the politicization of the Department, which we saw during the Obama-Biden years, Cruz released in a statement. “It is nevertheless my hope as the new Attorney General, Merrick Garland will lead the Department of Justice with a commitment to integrity and fidelity to the rule of law. We have a real humanitarian crisis at our Southern border, one that has bee
