As if the 2021 GPU shortage right now isn t already bad, it will actually keep on going until the end of the year. At least according to NVIDIA, that is.

NVIDIA themselves confirm that the current shortage of their high-performance GPUs isn t going anywhere anytime soon, according to a preview of the company s 2021 Q1 sales numbers.
Chief Financial Officer Colette Kress refers to the strong, consistent demand for GPUs that continues to exceed the NVIDIA s current supply. Despite this, however, Team Green says that they believe they ll have enough graphics cards in the inventory after Q1 to support sequential growth.

Nvidia has released a preview of its Q1 2021 revenue figures and a statement indicating the GPU shortage that’s bedeviled the market since September 2020 isn’t going away any time soon.
The good news is, Nvidia expects to earn more than the $5.3 billion it previously predicted. Nvidia doesn’t mention it in their own note, but FY Q1 2022 revenue of $5.3 billion would dwarf the $3.08 billion the company reported a year ago. Pandemic-related demand, gaming replacement cycles, and cryptocurrency mining have boosted Nvidia’s revenue ~1.7x year-on-year.
Valve published the latest Steam Hardware Survey (SHS) data just ahead of the Easter weekend. There aren t any sharp movements to be seen, and indeed that would be a rarity, but there are some interesting trends and milestones to observe this month.
PC video card usage
The most popular graphics card among Steam users remains the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060. It looks set to stay that way for quite some time with its considerable lead. The rising GTX 1650 is still significantly behind in third place. With rumours of a re-introduction it might be the second placed GTX 1050 Ti that takes the crown later this year, if anything, but it actually slipped a little this month.

Steam Data Shows Ampere GPUs Barely Trickling Into Market By Joel Hruska on April 6, 2021 at 9:01 am

As the GPU shortage continues, what constitutes “success” is being rapidly recast. Several publications have recently run stories claiming that an uptick in Ampere GPU deployments according to the Steam Hardware Survey constitutes evidence that these cards are making their way to gamers and that miners aren’t soaking up all the demand. This is factually true, inasmuch as cryptocurrency mining isn’t literally consuming every single GPU. When evaluated in a historical context, however, the current SHS doesn’t support an optimistic narrative about Ampere availability.
