SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): The business expectations of firms in both the manufacturing and services sectors turned positive after a year of gloom, with sentiment boosted by the start of Covid-19 vaccinations across countries.
Their sentiments were captured in the latest quarterly surveys released separately by the Economic Development Board (EDB) and the Department of Statistics (SingStat) on Friday (Jan 29).
A weighted 36 per cent of manufacturers expect better business conditions for the first six months of this year compared with the fourth quarter of 2020, while a weighted 4 per cent expect things to worsen, the EDB survey showed.

SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): Singapore has again made it to the top ranks of the least corrupt countries in the world based on a global survey released annually.
The Republic along with Finland, Switzerland and Sweden scored 85 points each, tying for third place in the 2020 Corruption Perceptions Index released by the global anti-graft movement, Transparency International (TI), on Thursday (Jan 28).
Denmark and New Zealand earned 88 points each to tie for top spot among the 180 countries and territories surveyed.
Singapore took top spot in Asia, and was the only Asian country to make it to the top 10.

SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): The Government has a five-pronged strategy to promote Singapore s status as a regional and global e-commerce hub, Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing said on Thursday (Jan 28).
He said Singapore firms must position themselves to take advantage of e-commerce opportunities as consumer behaviour during Covid-19 indicates a permanent shift towards online shopping.
He noted that online sales in Singapore as a proportion of total retail sales value had risen since the start of 2020, from 5.8 per cent in January to 14.3 per cent in November.

SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): Singaporeans have to take precautions as they celebrate the upcoming Chinese New Year amid the coronavirus pandemic, to guard against the risk of new clusters forming, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Wednesday (Jan 27).
On his part, he will be having a small celebration at home. Lee said: I will do my usual visits to essential workers who are still working away during this period. Then I will celebrate Chinese New Year with eight visitors not more from the family.
