The last week of school is a great time for teachers and students to get creative.
To fill in the last few days in his class, Fountain Hills Middle School social studies teacher Chris Peterson and his seventh-grade students went on a virtual tour of the townâs Sister Cities. With the help of Google Earth and FHSC Committee Chair Christine Colley, students âtraveledâ to places that share in community development with Fountain Hills.
FHMS students virtually explored Fountain Hillsâ Sister Cities of Dierdorf, Germany; Zamosc, Poland; Kasterlee, Belgium and Ataco, El Salvador. Each town has its own unique flair and the local schoolâs relationship with these towns and their schools is enriching for all, according to Peterson.
On May 12, Fountain Hills Middle School fourth grade students were treated to a special presentation by Debi Novotny, a local childrenâs author, educator and literacy guru.
During the program, children learned how to begin writing a book, the process of creative writing using the senses, and a bit about illustration as well.
This program was part of a new initiative by the Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and was partially sponsored by local business, Señor Taco. After the educational writing session, Novotny autographed and personalized copies of her book for each student, âWhere Do Hearts Grow?â
A second session with Novotny is set to take place today, May 19, for the children to further explore the process of âhow a book becomes a book.â They will be introduced to brief aspects of printing, publishing, illustration and distribution.
