Donald Lind Winchell Jr

    Donald Lind Winchell Jr., 74, La Mesilla, died Dec. 6, 2020.     Mr. Winchell was born to Donald Lind Winchell Sr. and Constance Palmer Winchell on July 9, 1946 in Bethesda, Md.     The family moved to Los Alamos in 1953 and he graduated from Los Alamos High School in 1964. Through a Navy ROTC Scholarship, he attended Oregon State University, graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics. Immediately following his graduation, he married his college sweetheart Donna Dykes on June 14, 1969.     After attending the Naval Nuclear Lab in Idaho, he served tours of duty on the Skipjack, the Queenfish and the Snook, culminating with a three-year tour as commanding officer of the USS DRUM (SSN 677). He went on to command Submarine Squadron 22 in La Maddalena, Sardinia, Italy from 1989 to 1991.

(U.S. Navy/Lorilyn Cravalho) PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii - The Los Angeles-class fast-attack submarine USS Topeka (SSN 754) arrived at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam following a change of homeport from Guam, Dec. 15. “I am very excited for this change of moving from one tropical island to another where the people, food and culture are wonderful,” said Cmdr. Richard Salazar, commanding officer of USS Topeka. “The crew and their families did a fantastic job of getting things ready in a timely manner and transitioning to a new place. There is so much logistics and stress that goes into a change of homeport, but the crew and their families did a tremendous job navigating through it all, and we are so happy to be here.”

22 SILVERDALE, Wash. (Dec. 11, 2020) - The blue crew of the Ohio-class ballistic-missile submarine USS Maine (SSBN 741) conducted a change of command, Dec. 11. Cmdr. Darren Gerhardt, from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, relieved Cmdr. Mike Tomon, from New Castle, Pennsylvania, to assume the duties and responsibilities as Maine Blue’s commanding officer. “I owe many people a debt of gratitude for reaching this point, for my story is really a story about all of you… the Sailors who show up every day and do what you need to do to get the ship underway, and despite the hurdles… press on,” said Tomon.
