FWP – Aquatic Invasive Mussels Found on Aquarium Moss Balls Aquatic Invasive Species Bureau Chief for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Tom Woolf has details. “This is an issue that s just arisen in the last couple days,” said Woolf. “What we have found is an aquarium plant, called moss balls, which are a ball of algae that people put in their fish tanks. These moss balls have been found with zebra mussels on them and they ve been distributed not just to Montana but throughout the country.” Woolf said the nation’s wildlife agencies are mobilizing to notify the public about this possible hazard.

County board approves bid for lake surveying and purchase of plow equipment St. James Plaindealer At Tuesday s Watonwan County Board meeting, the board passed a bid for lake surveys in the spring and summer, and the purchase of two plows and plow equipment.  The last surveys were done in 2019 on St. James Lake, Kansas Lake, and Long Lake.  Initial surveys on the lakes tested in 2019 came back negative. They do an aquatic vegetation survey to go through the lakes and see what s native vegetation out there and if there are any invasive species out there, said Chad Hildebrand, Soil & Water Conservation District Assistant Manager & County Ditch Inspector.

U S Army Corps explores helping states with aquatic invasive species costs

BRETT FRENCH The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is seeking comment on its proposal to help states along the upper Missouri River monitor for aquatic invasive species. If approved, the agency could pay half the cost of certain programs within five states, including Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota and Nebraska. The Corps participation in the regional coordination efforts could include everything from expanding the number of locations or hours of operation of AIS inspection stations, to adding canine detection, increasing public awareness, constructing site improvements, as well as augmenting existing monitoring efforts and response planning efforts, according to the agency’s draft environmental assessment.
