The invasive species inspection effort was validated at Riding Mountain National Park earlier this month.
In a post made to the park’s Facebook page recently, it’s noted staff prevented a potential ecological disaster when they found invasive zebra mussels attached to a visitor’s boat anchor.
This discovery prompted staff to remind the public that all watercraft, including inflatables and toys, and all beach toys must be inspected and/or decontaminated before entering any body of water.
Staff report noticing an increase in visitors avoiding the inspection/decontamination process and launching in lesser-used bodies of water, or at the main beach.
