Joel Goldenberg: The 1970s top-10 hits review Part 31

George McCrae- Gwen McCrae- Maureen McGovern- The Morning After: Most famous for being performed in the disaster movie The Poseidon Adventure. The hit version is a little overdramatic, but the instrumentation stands out. The version in the movie was not performed by McGovern. Don McLean- American Pie: It s fun to decode the lyrics in terms of its references to the Beatles, the Stones and others (kind of like Rick Nelson s Garden Party, soon to come in this series), but I ve just heard this lengthy song too many times. It makes people who were young adults in the 1970s swoon, though.

INTERVIEW There is only one race, the human race

YOU can hear the reality of  Sowetan life in the powerful album by the Urban Village Quartet Udondolo (Walking Stick)   an amalgam of traditional Zulu music, Marabi dance rhythms, township jazz and the sounds of South African working-class experience. Its roots are in the hard life of apartheid-accursed existence, internal migration and decades of political and cultural resistance. The band, according to drummer Xolani Mtshali, began in 2015 as the brainchild of guitarist Ntsane Lerato Lichaba. Childhood friends from their teens, Lichaba and bassist Simangaliso Dlamini were house and dance DJs before playing live instruments and the former met flautist and vocalist Tubatsi Mpho Moloi through a recreational hall where they learned piano and guitar.
