Milton-Freewater metalsmith hopes to carry on legacy of friend, mentor and owner of Hard Rock Machine Works

MILTON-FREEWATER — Mike Pierce went into former machine shop Hard Rock Machine Works in Walla Walla, Washington, to get a lug nut removed from his 1964 Baja Bug Volkswagen just before closing time. The shop owner, David Young, told him not to worry about the price, and Pierce asked if he was hiring. Though the answer was no, Pierce persistently came into the shop and even started sweeping the floors for free. After an employee didn’t get some parts right, Pierce made them the right way, and he was hired. This sparked a longtime career in machining and welding and opening his machine job shop in Milton-Freewater, Pierce Precision Machines, LLC, which provides custom machining, fabricating and welding services.

Legislature approves funding to complete BMCC-DOC deal

SALEM — By passing a bill, the state is poised to end a eight-month ordeal that nearly ended Blue Mountain Community College’s corrections education program. On April 8, the Oregon Senate followed the House in passing House Bill 5042, a spending bill that includes $542,033 for BMCC to help tie up some loose ends as it starts its new contract with the Oregon Department of Corrections. Sen. Bill Hansell, R-Athena, who voted for the bill, said the allocation will act as a stopgap funding to cover the few months between the end of the BMCC’s old contract with the state prison system and the beginning of its new contract.

BMCC sets timeline for presidential search

PENDLETON — If everything goes according to plan, Blue Mountain Community College will have a new president by July. At a Wednesday, April 7, meeting, the BMCC Board of Education approved a timeline to replace former President Dennis Bailey-Fougnier. Citing his health, Bailey-Fougnier resigned in February after a little less than two years on the job. The board subsequently appointed former Tillamook Bay Community College President Connie Green as the interim president. BMCC is hiring Gold Hill Associates for $29,000 to help conduct the search. Gold Hill, which has conducted presidential searches for BMCC in the past, has conducted more than 150 searches for community colleges in 26 states, including work for 11 colleges in Oregon.
