PENDLETON â No mask, no vaccine, no problem. In light of the state lifting its mask mandate July 1, Blue Mountain Community College elected to make masks optional for students and staff ahead of the return to in-person classes in the fall term. David Shellberg is BMCCâs chief operating officer and the chair of the collegeâs emergency response team, which has been providing the college with recommendations on its reopening policy. He said the group decided to lift its own mask rules because it wanted to align its policy with the state and local governments, where masks are no longer required.

UMATILLA COUNTY âThe impacts of COVID-19 in Umatilla County will last much longer than the laws set up to contain it. On Thursday, July 1, the state lifted the lionâs share of its COVID-19 restrictions, meaning social distancing and mask requirements were lifted in almost all settings. The following day, Umatilla County Board of Commissioners Chair George Murdock said he learned the countyâs contact tracing center will need to stay open for another two years. As the state leaves behind the remnants of the COVID-19 lockdown, Umatilla County will have to figure out how to protect a population thatâs overexposed and undervaccinated.
