According to the latest report of Longitudinal Ageing Study in India, high prevalence of co-morbidities has been found among them. What is more worrying is that the average of several chronic ailments Punjab’s elderly are suffering from is higher than the national average. Findings of the report are in line with the pattern of Covid deaths in Punjab, where elderly people with underlying health conditions account for majority of deaths. Of the total death count, about 65% deaths have been reported in the age group of 50 and above. Government data also reveals that in 88% of deaths, patients had underlying health conditions like diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, kidney disease and lung ailments.
