The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) says it has dispersed over $23 million as compensation for aggrieved consumers who were affected by the ‘bad gas’ incident of 2015.
Speaking at the CAC s press briefing on Friday, the body’s Chairman, Donovan White, said a total of 381 claims were slated to receive the one-off payment, with the first disbursements having been made on May 27 of last year. As at January 31, 2021, the commission has dispersed some $23.88 million for 336 claims. Petrojam Ethanol Limited (PEL) transferred some $24.5 million to the Consumer Affairs Commission on May 14, 2020 for disbursement to consumers who were affected, White stated. Persons who were approved for this settlement were those who had submitted a claim to the CAC, which were reviewed by the Fuel Investigation Committee and determined to have been substantiated in part or in full thereof, he added.
