Readers respond: Graduation rates don t tell full story

Readers respond: Graduation rates don’t tell full story Updated Feb 05, 2021; The Jan. 21 article on graduation rates is another example of how the success of schools should not be measured solely on four-year graduation rates, especially for schools that serve at-risk students (“Oregon graduation rate climbs to 83%, a new high, but schools may have lowered the bar for a diploma,” Jan. 21). Insight School of Oregon – Painted Hills is designed for academically at-risk students, including those who previously dropped out of school. For many students, Insight is their last hope at attaining a diploma. Over 82% of Insight students transfer from another high school credit deficient, and 9 out of 10 are not on track to graduate in their four-year cohort. Yet, the graduation rate measure holds that whenever a student transfers to a new school, no matter how many credits behind, they must graduate “on time” in their fourth year. FHS unveils rolling restart | News, Sports, Jobs

Superintendent Joe Brown FAIRMONT The Fairmont Area School District will begin its rolling start return to school plan for students at the high school starting on Monday. The plan was approved by the district’s COVID-19 consult team on Thursday. During Tuesday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Joe Brown said they were considering bringing back all students in grades 7-12 full-time four days a week, but having all students do distance learning every Wednesday. Pre-K, kindergarten enrollment drops; Oklahoma education officials concerned

Bartlesville Examiner-Enterprise Public school enrollment has dropped in Oklahoma for the first time in 19 years, with 75% of the decrease attributed to fewer pre-K and kindergarten students, according to the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Data shows 4,734 fewer pre-K students and 2,381 fewer kindergarteners enrolled in 2020-21 than in 2019-20. This decrease suggests parents are choosing to delay the entry of their 4- and 5-year-olds into school, officials said. “This pandemic has presented a multitude of challenges, and lower early childhood enrollment numbers tell us we will need to heighten our focus on early learning opportunities and strategic interventions to ensure these children have the prerequisite skills needed for reading and math,” State Superintendent Joy Hofmeister said.
