Years of federal government delays in the process to build new Hudson River tunnels have made the massive project more expensive, officials overseeing the project said.
The price to build two new tunnels under the Hudson River and rehabilitate the existing 110-year-old tunnels dubbed the Gateway project is now estimated at $11.6 billion, a $300 million increase over its last project estimate, said Frank Sacr, Gateway Development Corporation interim executive director. He announced the increase during the inaugural meeting of the new seven-member, bi-state Gateway Development Commission on Friday.

The long-stalled Gateway Project, which at its core includes building a new train tunnel under the Hudson River between Penn Station and New Jersey, and rehabilitating the existing 110-year-old Sandy-damaged tunnel, is expected to move to the front of the infrastructure project line under the Biden administration, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer confidently declared on Monday.
“I’ve got plenty of money,” Schumer said on a conference call with advocates and reporters. “I’ve called [incoming Transportation] Secretary Buttigeig, I’ve spoken to President Biden to release this money ASAP. If we’re not making progress I’m going to call on all of you to help.”

Two nominees to a board to oversee the Gateway Tunnel project have yet to be appointed, but they were given marching orders to “fight for New Jersey” from legislators vetting them Monday.
Transportation Attorney Janine Bauer, former Tri-State Transportation Campaign executive director and Dr. Balpreet Grewal-Virk, Hackensack University Medical Center vice president of community outreach were nominated and approved by the state senate judiciary committee on Monday.
They were told to “get ready to throw some punches” to ensure New York pays its fair share for the tunnel that will bring more Jersey commuters to work and pay taxes in New York City and State.
