According to Gas Networks Ireland, heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) and buses produce around 30pc of the country’s road transport carbon emissions despite only accounting for 4pc of vehicles. In 2019, Cavan company Virginia International Logistics became the first haulier in Ireland to complete a ‘zero carbon’ HGV delivery to Europe. Now, Kerry County Council has become Ireland’s first local authority to trial a carbon-neutral truck powered by compressed renewable gas.

It comes as the semi-state organisation exceeded its corporate social responsibility goals throughout 2020, contributing over €250,000 to more than 30 charities. This was up 15% on 2019, as the gas network operator worked closely with a number of groups supporting the most vulnerable in the communities during the pandemic. Among its partnerships in 2020 was Gas Networks Ireland s programme with Age Action. 

Slight drop in gas demand due to Covid-19 lockdowns

February 9, 2021 9:40 am The national gas network powered 51% of the country’s electricity requirements for 2020 and more than 85% at its peak in August. Wind supplied 36.7% of electricity and coal and peat – a combined 7.9%, prior to Ireland’s remaining peat plants ceasing operation in December, according to the latest data from Gas Networks Ireland. Overall, gas demand was largely stable in a year of economic turbulence, with a small drop of 0.3% of total demand largely down to reductions in some commercial sectors due to Covid-19. Sectors Significant reductions in gas usage were observed across construction (-25%), hotels (-11%), travel (-24%), leisure (-36%) and laundry (-35%) as the impact of national Covid-19 restrictions was felt across Ireland during the bulk of 2020.
