Nebraska ending participation in federal pandemic unemployment programs

LINCOLN, Neb. (KTIV) - Starting in mid-June, Nebraska says it will no longer participate in federal pandemic unemployment programs.
In a press release, Nebraska s Department of Labor announced the state has notified the U.S. Department of Labor of its intent to withdraw from the following unemployment programs.
Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC): Provides an additional $300 weekly payment to all recipients of state or federal unemployment benefits.
Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA): Provides benefits for those who would not usually qualify, such as the self-employed and gig workers.
Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC): Provides for an extension of benefits once regular benefits have been exhausted

That strength was on display for two hours on Saturday, April 17, when parents, kids and volunteers converged on the bricks downtown to celebrate the week of the young child.
Organizer Diane Livingston said the event came together in just three weeks, thanks to the community spirit of dozens of volunteers and merchants.
Members of the North Platte High football team ran kids games at the main intersection – bean bag toss, a football toss and a parachute. The colorful parachute has hand grips, so older kids and adults can hoist it high in the air and younger kids can run underneath.

Nebraska s unemployment system has battled fraud at an unprecedented level during the pandemic, the state labor commissioner reported Monday.
But Commissioner John Albin assured lawmakers that Nebraska also added more security measures to its system and has been more successful than the national average in detecting and preventing fraudulent benefit claims. Nebraska, and all states for that matter, has had to continually evolve its fraud response, he said. The type of fraud and the brazenness of the attacks had never previously been experienced at this level in unemployment systems.
