Planned blackouts roll through towns in Kearney area

The Antelope marfilenoj@lopers.unk.edu A record cold streak caused rolling blackouts in surrounding cities last week, forcing the Kearney area to conserve energy as a preventative measure. The advice from Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) enabled the community to avoid blackouts, though area towns were not so fortunate. Prior to last week, UNK hadn’t dealt with potential blackouts in over 10 years. The last time the Kearney area faced a major power shortage was during the ice storm of 2007, which limited Kearney power several days. On campus, power was maintained in occupied residence halls. Most other UNK buildings were only energized on a rotating basis to avoid freezing. At that time, classes were not disrupted because UNK was between semesters.

Utilities customers in some small Nebraska towns bracing for big bills after cold snap

MATT OLBERDING Lincoln Journal Star Unprecedented winter weather in Texas has caused oil and gas prices to rise. The frigid temperatures increased fuel demand but also halted wells and refineries across the state. Texas rare cold snap left millions without power last night in controlled outages.  Wahoo officials thought they were prepared for last week s historic cold snap. The city, which owns its own electric and gas utilities, had short- and long-term natural gas futures contracts in place, and it had a comfortable amount of natural gas in storage in Oklahoma, said Ryan Hurst, Wahoo Utilities general manager. But then temperatures dipped to record levels, with wind chills dropping as low as the minus 40s in Wahoo.

OPPD; NPPD customers could see bill increase following cold snap

By Julia Bertino Feb 23, 2021 (Undated) Electricity customers who didn t reserve power during last week s cold snap and shortages could see an increase in their February electric bill. The Nebraska Public Power District says they don t foresee the same impact that some people in Texas may face, but electric demand on NPPD’s system increased during the five days of record cold temperatures. “If a customer used more electricity than they normally do, their bill will likely go up for the month,” said Pat Hanrahan, NPPD Retail General Manager tells WOWT 6 News. “Bills will be dependent on how much electricity each customer used, but the overall rate for electricity did not change. Customers who took conservation measures, like lowering their thermostats, may not see much of an increase. Customers who did not take conservative measures should expect to see a higher than normal electric bill.”
