As convenient as possible : County opens Sierra College vaccine clinic to walk-ins

County officials announced Wednesday that Public Health’s COVID-19 vaccine clinic at Sierra College’s Grass Valley campus will be open to walk-ins. The new clinic at 250 Sierra College Drive opened Tuesday. It will be open from 8 am. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and appointments through the first week of June have been added to MyTurn . “We’re very interested in having this clinic available, just another avenue for folks to be immunized,” said Nevada County Public Health Officer Dr. Scott Kellermann in a Q&A Wednesday. Kellermann said the clinic’s first two days were “a little slow,” and that he hopes to see uptake at that clinic pick up.

The right thing to do : Dokimos family and staff has worked consecutive 12- to 14-hour days to help immunize Nevada County

A shot of hope. That’s what the owners and staff of Dokimos pharmacies have offered Nevada County residents. “We knew we needed to step up and create a COVID-19 vaccine clinic,” said owner David Dokimos, “rather than wait for the large corporate drugstores to eventually begin taking vaccination appointments. We just needed to find a way to do it without losing a ton of money.” David and Kelly Dokimos, with help from their daughter Jacque, opened western Nevada County’s first COVID-19 vaccine clinic for the public Jan. 28. They rented the former Ol’ Republic Brewery below the Dokimos Nevada City pharmacy. For the past three months, the three have logged long hours during the day at the clinic, and then worked late into the evening to keep their Grass Valley and Nevada City pharmacies up and running.

Active COVID-19 cases at Truckee High increases to 32

By Justin Scacco | Special to The Union An additional eight positive cases of COVID-19 have been reported at Truckee High School, bringing the total number of confirmed active cases to 32. Tahoe Truckee Unified School District sent a letter out to parents Monday evening, providing an update on the amount of new confirmed cases of COVID-19, which increased from 24 last Friday to 32 on Monday. Truckee High is now seven cases away from triggering rules that would require the entire school to transition to distance learning. Currently, the metric used for school closures is based on if the total number of positive cases reaches 5% of the staff and student population within a 14-day period. If Truckee were to reach 39 active cases, all extracurricular activities would be temporarily suspended, and the school would only reopen after receiving clearance from Nevada County Public Health.

Kelli Twomey, a spokesperson for the school district, said an additional 166 students were in quarantine Monday afternoon. In a letter to parents sent on Friday, school officials said “the majority, if not all of the positive cases, are a result from exposure during non-school related activities outside of the Truckee High School campus or any district facilities.” Twomey said contact-tracing efforts revealed that cases originated during several different off-campus meetings and activities. No faculty or teachers have been quarantined.
