STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agriculture specialists seized nearly nine pounds of “bushmeat” at Newark Liberty International Airport from a passenger that arrived from Ghana, the agency said in a release Tuesday.
Bushmeat, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is a term used for meat derived from wild animals ranging from non-human primates and bats to civets and African rodents that can be potential vectors of disease.
The traveler, an American citizen, declared the meat to CBP. It was then seized and destroyed at the recommendation of the CDC.
“CBP Agriculture Specialists made critical interceptions of these prohibited animal products and stopped them from entering the United States before they could potentially cause grave damage to our agricultural and economic vitality,” said Troy Miller, the director of CBP field operations at the New York Office.
