Work starts to repave, upgrade major Newark airport runway
Updated 8:20 PM;
Work started this week to repave and upgrade one of Newark Liberty International Airport’s major runways, a project that was approved in 2019.
The $84.2 million project began on Runway 4R-22L, which is Newark’s primary landing runway and handles nearly 47% of the airport’s flight activity.
Runways are generally rehabilitated every 10 years, and this one has shown signs of normal wear and tear, Port Authority officials said. It was last rehabilitated in 2012.
Work includes milling off the old pavement, repaving the runway with asphalt and renovating runway shoulders and intersecting taxiways. The project also includes the complete replacement of electrical infrastructure and installing new light fixtures.
