Newark NJ fire: 7-year-old boy dies in Astor Street blaze

A 7-year-old boy was killed in a Newark fire Thursday morning despite his father s attempt to re-enter the building, police said. The unidentified boy was found on the third floor of the building on Astor Street, which caught fire before 5 a.m., the Newark Department of Public Safety stated. The boy s father escaped through the front door and tried to go back inside through the roof, but firefighters pulled him back for his own safety.  Responders were unable to save the boy. Five people, two adults and three children, were in the building at the time of the fire, per Newark police. The survivors were taken to University Hospital for treatment.

The child’s body was found on the third floor. “(His) father escaped the home through the front door and attempted to re-enter via the roof” from the house next door, O’Hara said.

Newark police officers responded to the 200-block of Lehigh Avenue around 8 p.m. on Thursday after getting reports about a shooting, according to a joint statement from the Essex County Prosecutor s Office and the Newark Department of Public Safety. Officers found the victim, Debra Derrick of Newark, suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency responders rushed her to University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:27 p.m., authorities said.
