The coronavirus variant that was first identified in the UK in December has been detected in South Africa through genomic surveillance.
This was reported by Professor Tulio de Oliveira in a tweet on Thursday.
The variant, named B.1.1.7 (501Y.V1), has been detected in over 50 countries so far.

Professor Tulio de Oliveira, director of the genomics surveillance lab KRISP (KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform), confirmed on Thursday on Twitter that the B.1.1.7 (501Y.V1) had been identified locally.
