A Taradale man has been sentenced to eight months home detention for sexual offences involving an under-age girl he was supposed to be helping at a youth centre.
In Napier District Court on Thursday it was revealed the offences, which happened when the man was in his early 20s and the girl aged about 13, only came to light after she attempted to extort money from him about a decade later.

According to court documents it was a Napier woman s birthday, but it was also the day to come clean and finally plead guilty to charges relating to a car-buying scam involving more than $20,000.
That was the state of play for Shontei Marie Robin, now 24, when she appeared in Napier District Court on Wednesday, facing two charges of obtaining by deception, and three of failing to answer bail, by not fronting up in court to answer the charges.
Remanding her for sentencing on February 23, Judge Geoff Rea allowed bail but warned if she didn t meet the conditions she d be arrested and held in custody until the next appearance.

A young Napier man with a full-time job and no previous record with the police has learned the hard way about the folly of getting involved in illegal racing on the streets.
It cost 20-year-old Jack William Bryant close to $14,000 for the few seconds of excitement on a suburban Napier street – the loss of his written-off $9000 car, about $4000 for damage to a parked car hit during the brief episode, and $805 in a fine and court costs, and the loss of his driving licence for six months.

Police have arrested seven people and seized 21 firearms and hauls of methamphetamine, cannabis and cash from search warrants prompted by violent gang incidents in the region.
Eastern investigations manager detective Inspector Rob Jones said the search warrants had been executed across Hawke s Bay, Raupunga and Gisborne since December 8.
Jones said the warrants formed part of an ongoing investigation targeting the unlawful possession of firearms and drug-dealing offences by gangs across the Eastern District, following drive-by shootings and violent attacks over recent weeks.
