Cheers
Everyone wants to be remembered with a little something during the holidays, and Northeast Florida nonprofits are no exception.
And this year, we’re on the radar of philanthropist Mackenzie Scott, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ ex-wife, who gave away $4 billion to 384 nonprofits across the nation.
Three of them are in Northeast Florida:
United Way of Northeast Florida received $20 million
Goodwill Industries of North Florida received $10 million
YMCA of Florida s First Coast, which declined to disclose the amount of its grant.
Goodwill CEO David Rey called the gift a “game changer.”
All three of these nonprofits provide critical to services in the area, and they, like all nonprofits have been hard-hit by the coronavirus. These gifts will allow them to address many needs both short term and long term.

AdventHealth marked a historic day as COVID-19 vaccinations began for frontline team members at its Orlando and Celebration campuses Dec. 16, just one day after receiving its first shipment of COVID-19 vaccines.
“This is a milestone. It’s a huge one,” said Dr. Steven R. Smith, AdventHealth’s chief scientific officer. “We’ve looked very hard at the safety data. Everything looks great.”
Dr. Eduardo Oliveira, executive medical director for critical care services, is among the thousands of AdventHealth physicians, nurses and other team members signed up to receive the vaccine.
“Health care workers at the frontline are a little tired, but many of them have expressed that this is what they went into medicine for – that moment of fulfillment,” said Oliveira. “We are really hoping the vaccinations will go viral and we’ll be able to get over this.”
