Vaccinations resume at Golden Gate Fields after temporary shutdown due to horse racing protest

Update: 3:48 p.m. Up to 200 people who had COVID-19 vaccine appointments Thursday may not receive their doses due to the delay caused by the protest, city spokesperson Matthai Chakko said.
Additional Albany and Berkeley firefighters and city staff are responding to the site to vaccinate as many people as possible, but they may not be able to vaccinate everyone who was scheduled today. He said the site will likely not extend its hours for the day.

But the protest delayed a vaccine clinic at the site where hundreds of appointments were canceled.
BERKELEY, Calif. - An East Bay vaccination clinic was evacuated on Thursday and now there is an argument over blame.
An estimated 200 doses were missed at Golden Gate Fields, where a drive-thru clinic operates in the north parking lot.

Animal rights protesters, intent on permanently shutting down Golden Gate Fields, the Bay Area’s only horse racing track, successfully stopped an afternoon of racing Thursday but inadvertently caused the closure of a vaccination clinic in the track’s parking lot for about three hours as well.
Four members of Direct Action Everywhere, a global animal rights group, climbed over a fence and onto the backstretch of the track, where they chained their arms together inside PVC tubes and ignited purple smoke flares to announce their presence.
