Rules of engagement: what to do when an emergency vehicle approaches

Reflecting back on an incident Thursday, Karasiuk said he witnessed a driver pull into traffic, thinking that was the best way to give the ambulance room to get by. He explained what the driver should have done was signal her intention and pull to the right lane, and hopefully other drivers will one by one follow suit. “I know that might take you to cut somebody off but that’s the right thing to do. You do not, whatever you do on a red light, dart out into traffic,” he said. Karasiuk also explained if you cause an accident, the emergency responders will now have to stop and make sure you are safe, and then re-route another team to the call they were on. On top of this, you could be at fault for running a red light.

District of Lakeland nears home stretch for garbage collection change over

The rollout of new 66 bear-proof containers in the District of Lakeland is nearly complete, but the process has been met with some growling amongst ratepayers. The decision to move away from using 1,800 individual garbage bins was made to address the increasing number of bears in the area, and previous efforts to educate ratepayers about proper use and storage of the bins weren’t working. On Thursday, administrator Tammy Knuttila explained the majority of the changeover is complete but added there was still some tweaking being done. “There was actually one someone asked us to re-look at and we moved it, so now we are getting calls that the people wanted it where it was,” she said.

Nipawin residents pitch plan to make community safer

Zac Derouin is among those behind the vision for a Citizens on Patrol group. He told paNOW the goal is to get more eyes and ears on the ground, and deter those who are lurking in the shadows. “It’s getting to the point where elderly people, and well anybody, don’t feel safe going for a walk in the community,” he said. The initiative is still very much in the very early discussion stage, but to gauge interest, a community meeting was held last Saturday in Nipawin’s town square and roughly 50 people showed up, including representatives from the town. The local RCMP in the days following the meeting continued to receive phone calls and messages from people supporting the idea, Derouin said.
