The Federal Government has directed the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission to suspend the recently adjusted electricity tariff.
The Minister of Power, Sale Mamman, made this known in a statement on Thursday.
NERC had on Tuesday increased the electricity tariff payable by power consumers across the country. The hike in tariff which varies, based on different consumer classes, took effect from January 1, 2021.
The regulatory agency blamed the N2 to N4 adjustment in tariff on inflation and movement in foreign exchange rates. Labour unions have threatened showdown over the development, saying the government was insensitive to the plight of Nigerians, considering the fact that there was an increment last two months.

The Federal Government has said there is still a subsidy of 55 per cent on the electricity consumed by customers in bands D and E (who are served less than an average of 12hrs of supply per day).
This is contained in a statement issued by the Minister of Power, Engr. Sale Mamman, in reaction to reports of a 50 per cent increase in electricity tariff in Nigeria.
Describing the reports as inaccurate and false, Mamman lamented the confusion it has generated within the public.
The Minister revealed that apart from the subsidy on the electricity consumed by customers on bands D and E, the government still carries out a partial subsidy on the electricity consumed by those on bands A, B and C.

This is in spite of the denial by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) management of any hike in tariff.
News correspondent who sampled the views of residents on the increase on Wednesday reports that the consumers said that the increase would affect the living standard of the people in the negative.
Mr Marcel Ofor, a respondent, said that the increase at the beginning of the year when lots of spending had been made was insensitive to the hardship it would attract to the people.
