Stock investors gain N60bn as Seplat, 30 others rise

Punch Newspapers Sections ’Femi Asu Investors in the nation’s stock market gained N60bn on Monday as Seplat Petroleum Development Company Plc and 30 other firms recorded price appreciation. The Nigerian Stock Exchange All-Share Index rose by 0.33 per cent to close at 40,571.67 basis points on Monday from 40,439.85bps on Friday. The market capitalisation of listed equities increased by N60bn to N21.22tn from the N21.16tn at which it closed last week. The top five gainers at the end of trading on the floor of the NSE on Monday were Seplat, Japaul Gold & Ventures Plc, Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc, AIICO Insurance Plc and Multiverse Mining and Exploration Plc.

Share Following the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decision to retain the current rates, the Nigerian equities market extends its bullish run as market indicators hinges 0.83 per cent higher, on Wednesday. Basically, the Nigerian Stock Exchange All Share Index gained 0.83 by per cent to close at 41,930.73 basis points, pegging the year-to-date return at 4.12 per cent with market capitalisation standing at N21.934 trillion Market breadth also closed in favour of the bulls with 35 gainers as against 21 losers. CHI Plc, Guinea Insurance, Fidson Pharmaceutical, Champion Breweries and Lasaco Insurance led the gainers’ chart as the best-performing stocks today, whereas, Sky Aviation, Cornerstone Insurance, Caverton, Universal Insurance and FTN Cocoa led the chart from the rear.

The market breadth closed on a positive note with 28 gainers against 24 decliners. The ASI grew by 30.56 basis points or 0.08 per cent from 40,120.22bps last Friday to 40,150.78bps on Monday while the market capitalisation of equities appreciated by N16bn to close at N20.99tn from N20.98tn. On the activity chart, the insurance subsector dominated in volume terms with 153.12 million shares exchanged in 373 deals. The subsector was enhanced by the activities in the shares of Mutual Benefits Assurance Plc and AXA Mansard Insurance Plc.
