Strike by Iranian oil workers spreads amid rising wave of protests and stoppages The strike by Iranian oil contract workers is about to enter its fifth week. It has spread to 105 refineries, complexes and companies across 35 Iranian cities. The contract workers walked out over low pay and poor working conditions. They make around $300 a month, and are demanding to be paid around $500. A defence committee to support the strikers issued a statement on Sunday, appealing to other workers to come out in support of the contract workers, including workers directly employed by the national oil company. It also appealed for rallies in support of the strikers.

The employers’ body also said it expects the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to introduce tighter monetary options to curtail the rising inflationary trend. x At the 64th yearly general meeting of Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA), its president, Taiwo Adeniyi, who highlighted some policy recommendations and future outlook in charting new economic directions for the country’s long-term growth, stated that more effort was needed as well as the greater political will to continue in the path of steady growth.

ILO Decries Increased Cases of Child Labour in Ondo

James Sowole The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has decried the high rate of child labour in Ondo State, and urged media practitioners and the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to support the campaign of total elimination. The director of the ILO Nigeria Country Office for Liberia, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Nigeria and Liaison office for ECOWAS, Mrs. Vanessa Phala, stated this yesterday during a four-day training workshop on child labour organised for the media and NOA in Akure, the state capital. Phala said, “ILO are confronted with the harsh reality that the alarming rate of child labour in Ondo State may increase if it fail to take ownership of this fight immediately.”
