Controversy Trails Sack of Kwara Teachers

By Hammed Shittu inri The recent sack of 2,414 teachers under the ara State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) has continued to cause disaffection among stakeholders in theate. The sacked teachers were employed during the immediate past administration of Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed so as to address the inadequate number of teachers in basic and senior secondary schools in the state. The immediate past administration had on September 18, 2018, approved the employment of 1,850 basic and senior secondary school teachers in the state to address the shortage of teachers in science subjects and create fresh employment in the state. THISDAY gathered that the approval for the recruitment of the affected teachers was based on the separate requests by the SUBEB and the State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM).

Punch Newspapers Sections Our Reporters The Nigerian Medical Association on Sunday advised federal and state governments against disregarding medical experts’ advice on COVID-19. The NMA President, Professor Innocent Ujah,  stated this in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents while commenting on government’s decision to reopen schools beginning from Monday (today). Ujah stated that although the association would not advise government not to reopen schools, he stated that authorities must ensure compliance with COVID-19 guidelines of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The experts spoke as coronavirus cases in the country rose from 75,062 on December 17, 2020 to  108,943 on Sunday, January 17, 2021.

Partial compliance as schools resume in Lagos

Punch Newspapers Sections Dayo Ojerinde Schools in Lagos State on Monday resumed for the second term as directed by the state government. The Lagos State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Folasade Adefisayo, visited some schools to monitor their compliance with COVID-19 protocols. Some of the schools she visited in the Agege area are Diary Farm Senior Secondary School, District Junior College, Sango Junior Secondary School, Agege, Sango Senior Secondary School. Our correspondent observed that all the schools visited by the Commissioner had wash hand basins, infrared thermometers and the students in the classrooms used their face masks. Adefisayo said a staggered school resumption was in place to forestall the spread of the virus.
