Electricity: NDPHC completes 22 sub stations, others On By Udeme Akpan THE Niger Delta Power Holding Company, NDPHC, a key intervention agency in the power sector, has contributed over 3,400 megawatts, MW, to the national grid, while delivering 22 substations, a new report has shown. Specifically, the National Integrated Power Projects, NIPP project report from 2015 to 2021, obtained by Energy Vanguard, indicated that the NIPP programme is currently in its second phase that traverses transmission projects, distribution, and renewable energy. Through six NIPP, the report disclosed that in the first phase, NDPHC, which is owned by the three tiers of government, kick-started the first phase of NIPP with the construction of 10 gas-fired power plants, which it calls ‘The Big Ten’, especially in the Niger Delta.

Experts call for immediate inauguration of TCN Board On By Udeme Akpan EXPERTS, Wednesday, urged the Federal Government to inaugurate the board of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN with immediate effect, arguing that lack of it affects operations. The board of TCN, a major component of the electricity industry value chain was constituted in January this year, but it has not yet been inaugurated. The letters of appointment of the newly constituted board members, which has Muhammad Ahmad as the Chairman, were signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha. But an investigation by Vanguard, Wednesday showed that the Minister of Power, Mamman Kwagyang Saleh is opposed to the board’s inauguration, a development his Personal Assistant, Aaron Artimas, attributed to ‘some things to be sorted out’.

Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja The intervention by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the metering challenges in the power sector, has started to yield the needed results, it was learnt yesterday. Last week, the Special Adviser to the President on Infrastructure, Mr. Ahmad Zakari, confirmed that the federal government was revving up its disbursement of a N120 billion capital expenditure (CAPEX) to improve infrastructure, especially to support the metering programme by the Distribution Companies (Discos). It was gathered that a number of approvals had been made by the apex bank beginning from the last quarter of last year, with disbursements standing at N14.35 billion as at December 24, meant for the procurement of an additional 263,000 metering devices.

Nigerians pay billions of naira to DisCos despite frequent outages

While the customer base has improved to over 10 million, according to enumeration records submitted to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), power outages, rationing and low voltage are still prevalent among consumers. Analysis of revenue collection by the DisCos in 2019 shows that they improved the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) yearly collection by N39 billion, reaching a total of N485 billion, with a collection efficiency of 69 per cent. According to revenue records released by the Association of Nigerian Electricity Distributors (ANED), by the first quarter of 2020, DisCos had realised N127bn, which was over 10 per cent improvement than their quarterly collection of 2019.
