The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is believed to have the capacity to significantly boost intra-regional trade and break Africa’s longstanding dependence on foreign countries as export destinations and sources of imports and investment. With the official launch on January 1 this year, many trade blocs are beginning to realign their preferences in a bid to improve market access. FEMI ADEKOYA writes on how major trading partners like the United States and Europe are reviewing their trade programmes to align with the AfCFTA. The AfCFTA holds the ace for African countries to improve intra-African trade and replace activities that were hitherto dominated by third-party countries to Africans. Despite this potential, there are challenges about the ability of African countries to remove red tapes and encourage trade.

Alban Bagbin, has called on the Nigerian Government to review the prohibition list banning the importation of specific commodities into the Nigerian market from other countries, including Ghana. He said the request underscored by the resolution as captured in the communique of May 31, 2021, following the efforts by the leadership of Ghana and Nigeria parliaments to pursue parliamentary diplomacy towards finding a lasting solution to the trade impasse between some Ghanaian and Nigerian traders in Ghana. Bagbin made the request yesterday while addressing members of the House of Representatives in Abuja.

THE Ghanaian and Nigerian governments, on Wednesday, agreed to make a special law that would facilitate  trade and address the crisis that has lingered between both countries. Speakers of the Parliament from the two nations Femi Gbajabiamila (Nigeria) and Alban Sumana Bagbin (Ghana) disclosed this during a press conference after a closed-door meeting held in Abuja. Head of the Ghanaian delegate Bagbin said a consensus had already been reached through a special mechanism that would prevent a recurrence of the conflicts usually between traders from both nations. A special committee comprising selected lawmakers from Ghana and Nigerian is to work in alliance to enact the Ghana-Nigeria Friendship Act.
