This story is available exclusively to Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now. The red-hot SPAC craze isn t slowing as 154 SPACs have raised $48.5 billion so far this year. JPMorgan s Michael Cembalest studied 85 SPACs to examine the winners and losers in the ecosystem. He also shared why it is important to monitor the SPAC market over the next two years.  Perhaps nothing better illustrates just how hot SPACs have become than a recent rap song called SPAC Dream by recording artist Cassius Cuvée. His musical tribute to Special-Purpose Acquisition Companies was shared by billionaire Bill Ackman on Twitter last week with a simple call to watch this.

Mark Yusko on SPACs

Mark Yusko on SPACs The head of RIA Morgan Creek Capital recently launched an ETF to diversify investments in the blank-check companies. Special purpose acquisition companies, or SPACs, made up most of the growth in the U.S. initial public offering (IPO) market last year. In 2020, SPACs raised $79.9 billion in gross proceeds, topping the 2019 record of $13.6 billion, according to Nasdaq. There is even a SPAC focused on acquiring firms in the wealth management space, guided in part by Larry Roth, former CEO of broker/dealer Cetera and a long-tenured executive in the financial advisory industry. However, SPACs have also received a fair amount of bad press, with many pointing to subpar returns for investors.

Bill Schmick | @theMarket: Financial froth infects markets

One sure sign that stocks are getting overdone is the actions of overconfident investors that bid up stocks in a euphoric frenzy, only to dump them at the first sign of trouble. These behavior patterns normally usher in a corrective stage in the stock market, but exactly when that will occur is anyone’s guess. Investopia’s definition of froth “refers to a market condition where an asset’s price begins to increase beyond its intrinsic value.” Wall Street’s “Reefer Madness” event this week is just such an example. Certain stocks in the cannabis sector saw their share prices double and then triple in a matter of days. Penny pot stocks with little to no fundamentals skyrocketed higher as well, notching up 50 percent gains or more each day.
