Though not yet confirmed, clues linking to a more transmissible strain of COVID-19 have been detected in Hawaii as Department of Health officials continue to examine samples of the virus.
The DOH has found four specimens that exhibit a “molecular clue” associated with the highly transmissible B1.1.7 variant that first emerged in the United Kingdom. That mutation had not been detected in Hawaii.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean that the U.K. B1.1.7 strain is here, but it’s a clue, it makes things interesting,” said Dr. Edward Desmond, director of the State Laboratories Division at a Tuesday afternoon virtual interview session with media.
