New COVID cases, hospitalizations down for adults 60 and over

Chris Lisinski State House News Service BOSTON - In the three-plus months since Massachusetts first began administering COVID-19 vaccines with a phased rollout targeting vulnerable populations, the highly infectious virus s impact on older residents has dropped considerably. The rate of new hospitalizations for adults 60 and older has plummeted by nearly three-quarters since the start of 2021, while the portion of new cases among that age group was nearly cut in half over the same span. Improving health metrics among older residents have been highlighted by Gov. Charlie Baker as evidence that the vaccine, after a sometimes rocky rollout, is working as intended, even as some experts warn that the burden on younger adults is growing with more infectious variants spreading.

Vaccines on tap for California s children, but what do parents say?

Californians as young as 16 are next in line for the Covid-19 vaccine, potentially moving the state another step closer to reopening all schools for full-time in-person instruction. But whether vaccines help to reopen schools depends on whether parents are willing to get their children vaccinated. On April 15 eligibility for the vaccination will extend to Californians 16 and older. That minimum age could drop even lower in the coming months. Last week, Pfizer-BioNTech announced that its vaccine was “100 percent effective” and safe for children as young as 12. The company plans to ask the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to approve the vaccine for use in adolescents age 12-15 before the beginning of next school year.
