Oberstdorf – Slovenian cross-country skier Anamarija LampiÄ has been awarded the small crystal globe as the overall World Cup winner in the women’s sprint discipline as the International Ski Federation (FIS) decided to cut the season short after seven sprint events being held, with LampiÄ leading the standings.
After seven World Cup sprint events, the Slovenian has 402 points, well ahead of Nadine Faehndrich of Switzerland (296) and Linn Svahn of Sweden (275).
LampiÄ is only second Slovenian ever to win a small crystal globe in the Cross-Country World Cup, after Petra MajdiÄ won it in the sprint discipline three times – in 2008, 2009 and 2011. Her previous best was third place last season.
Klæbo defends cross-country sprint title at Nordic World Ski Championships Thursday, 25 February 2021
Johannes Høsflot Klæbo led a Norwegian clean sweep in the men’s cross-country sprint event as the first medals of the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oberstdorf were decided.
The defending champion was hoping to become the first skier to win consecutive sprint world titles at the Championships.
Klæbo began impressively by topping qualification in a time of 3min 0:08sec, before winning his quarter and semi-final heats.
A perfect day was completed by finishing the final in a winning time of 3:01.30.
His compatriots Erik Valnes and Haavard Solaa Taugboel completed the podium, ending 0.66 and 0.8 off this pace, respectively.
Lau competes at World Ski Champs

TT skier Nicholas Lau opened his Nordic World Ski Championships campaign in Oberstdor, Germany, on Wednesday.
Lau, competing in the men s 10K event, finished 73rd among the 85 participants that completed the event. Lau ended in 34 minutes and seven seconds (34:07.0). Winning the event was Mark Chanloung of Thailand in 24:23.8, Campbell Wright of New Zealand was second in 24:53.2 and Martin Moeller of Denmark took third spot in 25:17.0.
Brazilian Victor Santos was the only competitor not to finish the race. It was a tough one, (but) it was okay. There were pros and cons let s say as there always are, Lau told Newsday following his opening event.

Rasnov – The Slovenian mixed ski jumping team of Nika Križnar, Cene Prevc, Ema Klinec and Žiga Jelar finished second in the World Cup event in Romania’s Rasnov on Saturday to show a good form ahead of the Nordic World Ski Championships in Germany’s Oberstdorf.
Slovenia (945.3 points) were tied with Norway ahead of the last jump, only to eventually fall 23.4 points behind the Norwegian mixed team.
It was Halvor Egner Granerud, the leading male ski jumper in the World Cup, who jumped almost ten metres farther than Slovenia’s Žiga Jelar in the last round to bring the win for Norway.
